How to start a temporary employment agency

The most important step in setting up a temporary employment agency is actually writing a business plan. Here, you draw up your objectives, the methods needed to achieve them, how and when they should be achieved and what is needed to do so. A business plan is actually a step-by-step plan to your successful temporary employment agency!

Who are you?

Think about who you are, what makes your idea unique and what is your drive? Think about what really distinguishes you from others, so you can attract staff and customers. A good company name is also important, use the current market so that you really stand out! Make sure that your distinction also becomes your specialisation, so that you are always ahead of potential competitors.

Do an analysis of the future and think about where you want to be in 5 years. Draw up a task plan, so that you do not forget any important administrative matters. Draw up an overview of what you need and which starting capital fits this. This will prevent unexpected costs and ensure that you do not spend more than you earn. Important things to think about are the wages of your flex workers, but also a budget for unforeseen costs or if a client does not pay on time. It is also important to think about administrative tasks; will you do this yourself or will you outsource it?

What is your market?

When starting a temporary employment agency, it is good to think about the sector in which you see a future and are therefore going to operate. Make an important distinction from major competitors. Think about the current competition, but also who are your future competitors? Are there companies that are always heading in your direction? Think about which customers are interesting for your company and map out their needs and wishes. Maybe you have some connections that can help you build a good network to get more and more customers. Tip: focus on a scarce group, there is probably also the least competition and therefore your 'big future'. No big network yet? Give it some time, there will be a group of people around you who will help, that is the power of cooperation!

A useful concept is the 4 Ps of the promotion mix to properly map out your market and yourself in it.

  • Product: What do I offer and what makes me unique?
  • Price: What pricing strategy do I adopt? Am I the cheapest?
  • Place: Where am I going to offer my product and where is my target group?
  • Promotion: how do you communicate your product and price to the outside world?

It is also important to think about the 'culture' of a particular market or industry. Are there certain laws and regulations and collective labour agreements that you need to take into account? As a starting temporary employment agency, you have to register with the Stichting Pensioenfonds voor Personeelsdiensten (StiPP), but the various sectors may also have additional mandatory pension funds.

In addition, it may be the case that you need certain certificates in order to transfer reliably. Think for example of quality marks, are they important for your success and how can you obtain them?

Finally, it is certainly advisable to register with an industry organisation. A branch organisation can provide you with specific information about your branch, but also about legal affairs and insurance, for example. They can indicate which quality marks are relevant for your specific temporary employment agency, such as the SNA quality mark for temporary employment agencies, about working conditions and other personnel matters. A branch organisation is always up to date on the latest state of affairs, for example the developments regarding the corona easement.

Staff

After you have drawn up a good business plan, you will know roughly how many customers and services you can expect in the next two years, for example. Calculate how many staff you will need to start and also take into account certain peaks, such as the summer peak in the catering industry.

It is also very important to consider what customers expect from your staff. What qualities do your employees need? Do they need to follow a certain training before they can start working? At Fleks, you can have your employees take a quiz to check whether they are really ready for their shift. We also have a pool system that allows you to filter employees by quality. Isn't that practical?

Promotion

By now you are completely convinced of your potential temping agency, but are others? And how are you going to convince people? Promotion is key! Think about who your target group is and which channels they use. For new clients, Linkedin is a good tool, as it is very business driven and almost every company is active here. If you need new staff around 25-35, think of social media channels such as Facebook and Instagram, where this age group is most active.

Last tip: always present your business plan to family, friends or your neighbour. They can then look at it with fresh eyes and often see what you have overlooked! Keep your focus!
